How to keep malware and viruses from infecting your computer

How do I keep malware and viruses from infecting my computer?

Well, the short answer is… “You can’t!”  The sophistication of today’s hackers and trackers frankly exceeds the ability of any software program to be 100% effective to block modern attacks.  However, some disciplined maintenance and care can have your PC running as smoothly and safely as possible using preventative and cleanup programs that are completely free of cost.

First of all, let’s look at Anti-Virus software… Popular, and somewhat expensive, options such as Norton, McAfee, and Kaspersky do a very effective job of protection.  Unfortunately, they have a downside.  All are “resource hogs” that degrade your system’s performance.  Additionally, they pop up frequent warnings that are often cryptic in nature asking you, as a user, to make as decision to block or allow something to run.  The average user frankly doesn’t have a clue how to answer these questions.  Wrong answers can eventually prevent your PC from being able to access the Internet at all.

One very viable (and FREE) option is Microsoft Security Essentials.  It is provided by Microsoft at no cost to end users and has some other advantages.  It has very low “overhead” so it does not overuse system resources, thus leaving those resources available for other programs.  It is intelligent enough to know with a high degree of accuracy what programs need blocked and what should be allowed and it integrates seamlessly with Windows Firewall.  Although originally designed for Vista and Windows 7, it does a respectable job on Windows XP as well.  It can be downloaded here

  • IMPORTANT Please make sure to UNINSTALL any existing Anti-Virus software before installing Security Essentials.  One should NEVER run more than one anti-virus program at the same time.

Next article we’ll talk about how to use more free software to remove malware and keep your system running cleanly!
