When visiting with potential first time buyer for Log Homes it is not unusual to be asked. "What is the insulation value of a log home?
First you need to understand that only insulation, fiberglass, foam or cellulose is rated by R-value. Logs are rated by Thermal mass. The solid wood of a log wall acts, as a thermal mass, it slowly absorbs heat during the day and then slowly gives it off during the night. It’s along the theory as in the olden days, when the Pioneers on a cold night would heat rocks and put them at the foot the bed to slowly give off heat during the night. The simple answer would be a 2x6 wall with R-30 insulation will give you almost the same benefits as an eight inch log wall. To get the maximum result from Thermal mass for you log home you need to consider your building site and any trees around your future home.
