The Durango Herald

Yes, we know – we’re fabulous

Skiingmag.com named Durango No. 1 ‘Dream Town’

Yet another media outlet is heralding Durango’s scenic beauty and unique small-town feel.

This time, Skiingmag.com has named our fair burg its No. 1 “Dream Town.”

“Durango, Colorado, doesn’t hold up to the dramatic proximity of, say, an Aspen or Telluride, where slopes stare you in the face just leaving the grocery store,” the article said. “But what makes this southwestern town so dreamy is what it’s not.”

Rather than being just a ski town, it’s “a mountain-biking, kayaking, rock climbing, fly-fishing, hiking town with nearby access to some of the best skiing in the U.S.,” it said.

The article featured some local restaurants and night spots.

“As diverse as the outdoor activities are in Durango, the dining and nightlife options are just as varied,” the article said.

Other notable outlets that have mentioned Durango recently include the website for National Geographic, which featured the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic as one of its “10 Amazing Races in Amazing Places.”

Renowned travel writer Patricia Schultz dubbed it one of seven “undiscovered” cities to “see before you die.”

Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal and True West Magazine are other publications that have extolled Durango’s virtues in the last year.

Anne Klein, spokeswoman for the Durango Area Tourism Office, said the frequent mention of Durango in national publications gets the word out about what a gem it is.

“It’s pretty safe to say in 2012 we will see an increase of numbers contributed by this type of awareness and the Pro Cycling Race in August,” Klein said.
