Specialized vs. Trek

I am going to be getting a mountain bike in the next few weeks and I need advice. I need to stay under $700 and was going for a hard tail with disc brakes....which would be the better brand to go with, Specialized or Trek? Thanks!

  • Erin Smith says - Dear New Bike Owner, Both Trek & Specialized make an incredibly good product. The differences you will find in the two are the geometry and how they are spec’d out. My advice would be to test ride both brands to see which brand’s geometry fits your body shape. You want to feel comfortable when riding your new bike. Also, look at the components on each bike in your price range to see what comes on it. Look for the component areas where the manufacturer has decreased or increased in value. For example, a particular bike may have a higher quality derailleur and a lesser quality fork to keep the bike in a certain price range. You can decide what components are more important to you and pick the bike that fits your decision. Have fun and hopefully we will see you in the store for a test ride!

old pills

Asked By: Steve Linn - In: Healthy Lifestyles

I have some old pills (perscriptions) that have expired. Where do you dispose of old medicine? I asked my pharmacy - they said to flush them down the toilet. Really? some are antibiotics...I thought this was bad for the environment?

  • Tina Dalcour says - it all ends up in the toilet anyway and i don't understand where people think would be a safer place. the better option is not to take any - stay healthy and no need for medicine
  • Greg Lauver says - [ ... sorry, I posted this in the wrong place ...] Don't flush them - they end up in public drinking water because water companies only test for the usual germs, minerals, and organic compounds on a standard list which doesn't list pharmaceuticals. In addition, antibiotics will breed "super germs" which are antibiotic resistant. Don't mix pills with cat litter or anything else which is headed for a landfill, because the stuff will end up in the ground water. I really appreciate that you asked this question since many tons of pharmaceuticals are dumped in drinking water: http://www.naturalnews.com/029314_waterways_contamination.html You might want to ask the Animas / Rivergate Medical Centers.
  • Scot Davis says - There is a community "pill" drop off, for proper disposal, coming soon (I don't know the date). Contact San Juan Basin Health Department's "Environmental Division" for more info.

Any suggestions for fly fishing spots this weekend?

Asked By: Joshua Rank - In: Sports & Outdoors

August 8th is my birthday and it has recently become a tradition for me to go off on my own for a day of solitary fly fishing. I was thinking of maybe hitting the Dolores tailwater (tough fishing) or maybe the Alta Lakes in my float tube (laid back fishing). There are so many choices here in SW CO. Any suggestions or hot spots.

  • Joshua Rank says - Go to the Alta Lakes. The fishing is awesome.

How can I get Direct TV to give me Denver local channels for my Durango home?

I read in a Herald user comment that you could open a P.O. box address in a neighboring county and give then that. But the physical location for the satelite install is in Durango. So, how would this be positioned with Direct TV so as to get them to turn on the Denver channels? My service is to be installed in several weeks.

  • Jim Price says - You can forget about getting Denver channels on ANY of the satellite providers. It is a political struggle and the Colorado politicians are wusses! We probably should be incorporated into New Mexico or Utah for all the concern we generate from the Front Range.

New photographer looking for a place to display my work

I don't have a lot of photography connections in Durango...I've recently gotten back into photography and have some of my favorites matted and framed, and plans to do the same to some more if I can find anywhere to display them in Durango. Does anyone know where I can display my work? And what requirements they have to do it? I've got a few of my photos up on here if you want to take a look. Thanks!

  • Joan Zwisler says - Several of the local restaurants & coffee shops show artwork in their spaces. Walk around and check it out!
  • Greg Lauver says - Inquire at Maria's Bookshop.
